What is CAS?

Client advisory services (CAS) include any engagement where an accountant or firm advises clients on financial and accounting-related issues & strategies.

Client advisory services (CAS) are often confused with client accounting services, and we're here to set the story straight.  Unless otherwise noted, CAS means offering guidance to clients on anything related to financial or accounting decisions and issues. CAS can include:

  • Virtual or outsourced CFO services
  • Financial statement prep
  • Business forecasting
  • Accounts payable
  • Payroll/1099s
  • And more!

Traditionally, CAS does not include any of the following services, which could be considered to be client accounting services:

  • Bookkeeping (without advisory services, including cloud bookkeeping)
  • Write-up services
  • After-the-fact reporting
