While accounting content can be serious—especially when talking about accounting standards and the IRS—the Botkeeper style avoids writing that feels too academic or formal. If you find yourself writing things like, “in this blog post, we will cover X, Y, and Z’ or summing things up by saying, “in conclusion,” you might consider rewriting for a more casual tone.
Don’t belabor the point. If you can say it in four words, don’t say it in eight. Pay attention to filler phrases like “in order to” when you can simply say, “to.”
One way to establish authority and make sure our audience knows we know our stuff is to include a lot of data points. And include credible sources for those data points. It’s accounting, after all—we should be great at talking numbers!
It’s OK to use contractions. If you’re more comfortable writing a contraction out, feel free to do so. But it’s also totally cool to say “you’re” instead of “you are.” It is NOT OK to say “your” when you mean “you’re.”
But do so sparingly. A good rule of thumb to follow is no more than one exclamation point per email or section of writing. Of course, there are exceptions, so use your best judgment. NEVER use more than one exclamation point at a time.
Similar to exclamation points, you can drop in some fun gifs and references when appropriate. Just beware of the technical skill it takes to insert/embed, and also be very cautious of image size since it affects load time. That said, don’t overdo it!
No one wants to wade through lengthy, boring paragraphs, so try to cut your content down to digestible sections of text. Play around with section headers and imagery to help break up the text.
Default to the Chicago Manual of Style for grammar, punctuation, and formatting questions. You can usually find the answers to style questions by Googling CMS rules on a given topic.
Consider your content goal and focus on making it clear for the reader. Don’t make them have to work too hard to understand what you’re doing with a piece of content (or why you’re talking to them in the first place).
